When you may need blood, think about the benefits of blood management.
What is blood management?
Blood is critical, but more so when it may be needed for surgery or an ongoing condition. Blood management focuses on reducing blood loss, building up your own blood or both. We bring the safest alternatives to you. No matter what the need, you can choose from our alternative treatment options. Your doctor can help you with the benefits and risks of each.
Treatment Options:
• Medications to make blood cells
• Recycle your own blood during surgery
• Prepare for or prevent blood loss
How does the program work?
Program nurses are available for more information or physician referrals. Our nurses make sure resources are in place for you. Once your doctor determines which method is best, we coordinate your care with the entire team. If you are already in the hospital, treatment can occur in your room. Outpatient and consultations are by appointment at each facility.
Understanding your blood needs
When a blood transfusion is needed, it falls under one of the following:
• Red cells > carry oxygen
• Platelets > stop bleeding
• Plasma > support blood volume
When any of these are low, it can affect your heart, lungs, kidneys, and brain. Low blood can weaken your health and recovery. Ask your doctor about your treatment needs and options. This checklist may help you:
• Why do I need a transfusion?
• How will it benefit my health?
• What are the risks?
• What are the alternatives?
Choices for blood transfusion:
• Unknown donor
• Donate your own blood
• Build up your blood with medications
