Preadmission Testing

Please Note: As of Monday, May 3 Preadmission Testing is moving to Medical Building 2, Suite 450.  The newly renovated space will offer a private waiting area, larger exam rooms, new equipment including computer stations for Electronic Medical Record access and convenient parking.  For more information call 440.312.4545.

You and your doctor have decided that you are going to have a procedure at Hillcrest Hospital. Prior to your procedure your doctor will want you to have an appointment in Preadmission Testing.

In the past, patients were admitted to the hospital one to two days before their procedure/surgery for a medical workup, laboratory testing, and patient instruction. Because the majority of patients now come to the hospital the day of their procedure, we must evaluate and teach our patients in an outpatient setting. To perform this service we have developed the Preadmission Testing (PAT) program.

How long will I be there?
Expect to be with us for two to three hours (remember your PAT appointment replaces the overnight admission). You may also have other appointments scheduled that are appropriate for your type of procedure such as physical therapy, a brace fitting, or special monitoring tests. Expect these to extend the amount of time you will spend here.

Where is Preadmission Testing Located?
Preadmission Testing is located in Suite 450 at the Hillcrest Hospital Medical Building 2.

Hillcrest Hospital Medical Building 2
6801 Mayfield Road, Suite 450

Mayfield Heights, Ohio 44124

440.312.4545

Where will I go when I arrive?
Please check in with Registration in Suite 122.  Then you can take the elevators in Medical Building 2 to the 4th floor, Suite 450.

Who will I see?

You will be greeted and asked for basic information.  Then you will be escorted to the changing area and will put on a gown and robe.  They will also do your blood tests, urine test, EKG (electrocardiogram), and any necessary X-rays.

Preadmission Testing RNs and Physician Assistants will do a complete medical history and physical examination. They will also ask you questions regarding your health and will teach you about your upcoming hospital stay.

What other things should I know?
You may eat regular meals and take your regular medications on the day of your Preadmission Testing appointment unless you have been told otherwise. You may be asked the same questions more than once because it is important that we double check information for your safety.

Remember, our health care team is here for you. We want to help you feel more relaxed and comfortable about your hospital stay. Feel free to write down any questions you have and ask them while you are here. If we cannot answer them, we will find someone who can.

What can I do to help my appointment go smoothly?
Before your appointment in Preadmission Testing you should:

    • Know the name of the procedure/surgery for which you are scheduled.
    • Have a basic understanding of the procedure and an explanation of any risks involved.
    • Please bring a list of all the medications, vitamins and supplements as well as strengths, and dose that you take. We need all of the medications you take, including over-the-counter drugs.
    • Know your medical history. We need the most accurate information about you as possible. If you have trouble speaking or remembering, you may want to bring your spouse, adult child, or a close friend with you to help give this information.
    • Bring your insurance card(s) and picture ID with you. As a suggestion, you may want to look over your insurance coverage before coming to the hospital. Call your insurance company if you have any questions.
    • Please drink some fluids before your appointment so that we may obtain a urine sample.

What questions should I ask?
Below are some common questions you may want to ask at your Preadmission Testing appointment:

    • Where do I report on the day of my procedure?
    • Do I need to take any of my prescribed medications the day of surgery?
    • What will be done to make me comfortable?
    • When can I have something to eat or drink?
    • Will I have tubes? IV? Foley catheter?

How do I schedule my PAT appointment?
You may call the Preadmission Testing department from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; or 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday to schedule your appointment. Our phone number is 440.312.4545.

Your appointment should be scheduled for a time no earlier than 30 days or later than three days before your scheduled procedure.
